Zero order waveplates

from 266 nm to IR | >10 J/cm2 at 1064 nm

Zero order waveplate consists of two low order plates that have their optical axes crossed. This way, the retardation of plates is cancelled and the required retardance is achieved by adjusting the thickness of two plates. The waveplates are designed in such way that it only gives the desired retardance without additional wavelength shifts that happen in low order waveplate.

Where are zero order waveplates used?

3photon suggest using zero order waveplate where increased sensitivity is required and low order waveplate is not sufficient anymore. It performs in broader bandwidths and is less sensitive to temperature or wavelengths variations if compared to low order waveplates. Zero order waveplates also may find the same application fields as low order waveplates with decreased sensitivity to temperature and wavelength changes, thus making it more attractive to use with diode, femtosecond and tunable lasers.

3photon offers three designs of zero order waveplates that are:

  1. Cemented zero order waveplate: transparent optical glue is used to combine two plates together
  2. Optically contacted zero order waveplate: attraction forces of Van der Walls are used to put two plates into contact
  3. Air-spaced zero order waveplate: a special design that has a vacuum layer between two plates to cancel out the disadvantages that occurs with optical glue and optical contacted layers

Based on the design, achieved values for damage threshold, wavefront distortion, laser beam deviation differs. Air-spaced design – being the most expensive one – guarantees the best specifications for zero-order waveplate.
